Rugby League Ireland and Leeds Metropolitan University announced a partnership that will see a full development programme implemented throughout Ireland over the next five years.

Leeds Met is one of the largest universities in the UK with over 50,000 students and 300,000 associated students through its Regional University Network of partner colleges. The university is also known in sporting circles as Carnegie after one of its founding colleges, now the renowned Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education.

The partnership has been inspired by the rapid expansion of the game over the last three years throughout Ireland, with the domestic league growing from an 8 to 16 team competition, to be re-launched this season as the Carnegie League. A new tertiary competition, the Carnegie Student League, will be implemented later this year.

The partnership will enable Rugby League Ireland to develop a progression pathway for players, coaches and officials from grass roots to international. Rugby League Ireland and Carnegie will work together with the Irish Government to implement the new Schools Completion Programme and promote rugby league as a fully inclusive sport and a means to improving education and health. Carnegie will also provide support through development programmes ranging from coach education and player performance evaluation to research, PR and event management.
